PTE vs IELTS 2026: Which Is Easier for Australia? (Honest Answer)

I want to tell you something that might surprise you.

Before I started Dream English Education, I tried IELTS.

English is my third language. I studied hard. I practiced. And my result? Honestly – disappointing. Then a colleague suggested I try PTE. Same English level. Same me. Completely different result. I scored significantly higher in PTE than I ever did in IELTS, and it changed the entire direction of my career.

That personal experience is why I feel so strongly about this topic – because I’ve seen it happen with thousands of students at Dream English over the past 8+ years. Smart, hard-working people stuck in an IELTS loop, who switch to PTE and finally get the score they need for their Australian visa or university application.

So which test is actually easier in 2026? Let’s break down PTE vs IELTS honestly.

What Is PTE Academic?

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) is a computer-based English proficiency test accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for visa applications, as well as by hundreds of universities in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and Canada.

Key facts for 2026:

  • 2-hour exam, completed in one sitting at a test centre
  • 100% computer-based – no human examiners for most of the test
  • Uses AI scoring (with a new human assessment layer added from August 2025)
  • Results typically available within 3–5 business days
  • Accepted for most Australian visa subclasses including 189, 190, 482, 485, and 500
  • Scores range from 10–90

What Is IELTS?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world’s most popular English test, co-owned by the British Council, IDP Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English.

Key facts for 2026:

  • Available in Academic and General Training formats
  • 2 hours 45 minutes total
  • Speaking test done with a human examiner (face-to-face or via video call for IELTS Online)
  • Results in 3–13 business days depending on the format
  • Bands range from 0–9
  • Also accepted for Australian visa and university applications

PTE vs IELTS 2026 – The 7 Key Differences

1. Scoring System

This is the most important difference – and the one that favours PTE students most.

IELTS: Your writing and speaking are marked by human examiners. This introduces subjectivity. You might get a Band 7 from one examiner and a Band 6.5 from another. For a visa application, that 0.5 difference can cost you thousands of dollars and months of waiting.

PTE: Primarily AI-scored, with an additional human assessment layer introduced in August 2025 for speaking responses. But here’s the crucial point – once you understand how the AI thinks and what it rewards, you can consistently hit your target score. The scoring is predictable. You can practice specifically for it.

“You could literally have Albert Einstein or Barack Obama sit the PTE exam and they would fail – if they didn’t know the strategies. But once you understand how the scoring works, any person can achieve 65+ in each section.” – Alex Siletsky, Dream English Education

2. Format

IELTS: Four separate components – Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking. The Speaking test is often on a different day or time from the rest of the exam. You write by hand in some versions.

PTE: Everything is done in one 2-hour session on a computer. No pen, no paper answers, no human examiner sitting across from you. For many students – especially those who feel nervous in front of examiners – this is a massive relief.

3. Speed of Results

IELTS: Academic paper-based results take 13 days. Computer-delivered results take 3–5 days.

PTE: Results are typically available within 48–72 hours of your test. If you’re on a tight visa deadline, this makes a real difference.

4. Cost in Australia (2026)

Both tests cost roughly the same range – approximately $380–$430 AUD – but check the official websites for current pricing in your city.

Test Approx. Cost (AUD) Result Time
PTE Academic ~$395–$430 48–72 hours
IELTS Academic (Paper) ~$380–$420 Up to 13 days
IELTS Academic (Computer) ~$380–$420 3–5 days

5. Test Centre Availability

Both tests are widely available across Australia. PTE test centres are available in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, and most regional centres. You can typically find a PTE booking within 1–2 weeks, sometimes sooner. This is important when you’re working towards a visa deadline.

6. Retakes

PTE: No restriction on how many times you can sit, and no mandatory waiting period.

IELTS: Similar – no strict limit, but some universities may have policies.

For both tests, you want to get it right the first time. A failed attempt costs another $400+.

7. Score Requirements for Australian Visas

The score equivalencies that the Department of Home Affairs uses are set out in their official documentation. Broadly:

English Level PTE Score IELTS Score
Competent English 50 6.0
Proficient English 65 7.0
Superior English 79 8.0

Note: As of August 2025, Australia made major changes to how PTE scores are evaluated for visa purposes. Read our full breakdown of the 2025–2026 PTE immigration score changes here.

Why Most Students Find PTE Easier Than IELTS

I want to be direct with you: PTE is not easier because it tests simpler English. Both tests are rigorous and test real academic English skills.

PTE is easier for most students for one specific reason: it is learnable through strategy, practice, and understanding the scoring system.

Here’s what I mean.

In IELTS, even if you practice for 6 months, a human examiner might have a bad day. Or they might not like a particular accent. Or they might interpret your writing score slightly differently to another examiner. You have no control over that.

In PTE, the AI scoring is consistent and predictable. Once you know what it rewards – fluency, correct word sequence, accurate content – you can specifically practice for those things. At Dream English, I’ve personally coached students whose English level wasn’t exceptional, but because they understood the exam deeply, they consistently scored 79+ or even 90/90. Our PTE Scoring Guide breaks down exactly what the algorithm looks for in every question type.

I’ve had Irish and Scottish students – native English speakers – who failed PTE because they didn’t understand the format. And then two sessions later, they were scoring 90/90.

That’s the power of knowing the system.

PTE vs IELTS: Which Should YOU Choose?

Choose PTE if:

  • ✅ You want faster results (48–72 hours vs up to 13 days)
  • ✅ You get nervous in front of human examiners – PTE is done entirely on a computer
  • ✅ You’re good at structured strategies and want a predictable scoring system
  • ✅ You tried IELTS and felt the human element was inconsistent
  • ✅ Your English is conversational and functional but you want to maximise your score through technique
  • ✅ You need a score quickly (available booking slots usually within 1–2 weeks)
  • ✅ You’re applying for an Australian visa that accepts PTE (most do)

Choose IELTS if:

  • ✅ You’re very comfortable speaking with humans in a formal setting
  • ✅ You’re applying for a country or institution that doesn’t accept PTE (e.g. some Canadian provinces, a handful of UK institutions)
  • ✅ You prefer writing by hand rather than typing
  • ✅ You already have strong results in a previous IELTS attempt and want to improve specific bands
  • ✅ Your employer or registration body (e.g. some AHPRA pathways) specifically requires IELTS

Common Questions

“I got IELTS 6.5 three times and can’t get 7. Should I switch to PTE?”

Yes – this is one of the most common situations I see. When someone is stuck at Band 6.5 (especially in writing or reading) in IELTS and keeps retesting, switching to PTE often unlocks the result they need. The strategies are different, the scoring is different, and sometimes a fresh test format is exactly what’s needed. If you’ve been stuck in the IELTS cycle, come talk to us at Dream English.

“My friend failed PTE but passed IELTS. Does that mean IELTS is easier for me?”

Not necessarily. Your friend may not have known the PTE strategies. PTE without strategy = poor results. PTE with the right strategies = consistent high scores. This is exactly what we teach at Dream English Education.

“Is PTE accepted by Australian universities?”

Yes. PTE Academic is accepted by virtually all Australian universities, including Group of Eight universities. It’s also accepted by RMIT, Monash, UTS, UQ, UNSW, Melbourne, Sydney, and more.

“Can I use PTE for my PR application in Australia?”

Yes. PTE Academic is accepted by the Department of Home Affairs for all major visa subclasses requiring an English proficiency test. Check the latest score requirements here.

My Recommendation

If you’re in Australia preparing for a visa application, studying for a degree, or working toward professional registration – and you haven’t tried PTE yet – I strongly recommend you give it a go.

Come prepared, though. Don’t just walk in and wing it. Understand the exam format first (our Beginners Guide is a great place to start), then follow our PTE 30-Day Study Plan to structure your preparation week by week. Focus on the high-value questions – Describe Image is the single biggest at 15% of your Overall score, followed by Repeat Sentence, Summarize Group Discussion, and Write Essay. For the full official breakdown of exactly how much each question type is worth, read our PTE Score Breakdown guide. And before you sit, clear up any scoring misconceptions with 9 PTE Scoring Myths Busted – the misinformation about how PTE is marked is genuinely expensive if you act on it.

And if you want to make sure you get your score on the first try – because at $400 per attempt, you really can’t afford not to – that’s what we’re here for.

Frequently Asked Questions: PTE vs IELTS

Is PTE accepted for all Australian visa applications?

Yes. PTE Academic is accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for all major visa subclasses requiring proof of English, including subclasses 189, 190, 482, 485, and 500. It is also accepted by virtually all Australian universities and the majority of professional licensing bodies.

Is PTE easier than IELTS?

PTE is not easier in terms of English level – both are rigorous academic English tests. However, most students find PTE more learnable because the AI scoring is consistent and predictable. Once you understand what the algorithm rewards, you can systematically train for it. With IELTS, human examiners can vary in their assessments on the same response.

How do PTE and IELTS scores compare for Australian visas?

The official equivalency is approximately: PTE 50 = IELTS 6.0, PTE 65 = IELTS 7.0, and PTE 79 = IELTS 8.0. Use the PTE Score Calculator for exact visa-specific comparisons – different subclasses have different component score requirements.

Can I switch from IELTS to PTE if I’ve already attempted IELTS?

Yes – there’s no restriction on switching between tests. Many students who plateau at IELTS Band 7 switch to PTE and achieve the equivalent score within 30 days. The strategies are completely different, so targeted preparation for PTE specifically is essential before sitting the test.

How quickly do PTE results come out compared to IELTS?

PTE results are typically available within 48-72 hours of your test. IELTS computer-based results take 3-5 days; paper-based results can take up to 13 days. For visa applicants on tight deadlines, PTE’s fast turnaround is a major practical advantage.
