PTE Rescore 2026: The Complete Guide Before You Request One
PTE Rescore 2026: The Complete Guide Before You Request One
Quick Answer: A PTE rescore (officially called a 'score review') costs approximately AUD $60-80 and takes 2-4 weeks. Score changes on rescore are rare and usually small. If your score feels wrong, it is almost always more efficient to retake after identifying and addressing weak areas.
Hey guys, Alex here.
Every week I hear from students who are considering a PTE rescore. And every week I have the same conversation: stop before you do anything, because a rescore is irreversible.
If you got a result that feels wrong, I understand the instinct to challenge it. But the rescore process has rules that most students don't know about – rules that can make your situation worse if you go in unprepared.
Let me walk you through everything you need to know.

What Is a PTE Rescore?
A PTE rescore (officially called a Human Rescore) is a post-results service where every open-ended response in your test is reviewed by two independent human raters.
It's not just the questions you think were scored wrong. It's your entire test – all speaking and writing responses are reviewed from scratch.
This is important to understand because many students think they can request a rescore of just their Speaking or just one section. You cannot. It's all-or-nothing.
The Three Post-Results Services
Pearson offers three different post-results options. They are distinct and not interchangeable:
1. Technical Review
- Checks for technical issues – audio problems, recording failures, software errors
- If a technical issue is found, your fee is refunded and the section may be rescored
- Scores are NOT changed based on a Technical Review alone – it only identifies technical problems
- Timeline: varies
2. Human Rescore
- All open-ended responses reviewed by two independent human raters
- If the two raters disagree, a third expert is brought in
- The resulting score permanently replaces your original score
- Result can go UP, DOWN, or stay the SAME
- The rescore result is final – you cannot revert to your original score
- Timeline: typically 2-4 weeks
- Cost: varies by region (check pearsonpte.com for current pricing)
3. Appeal
- Does NOT rescore your test
- Verifies that the rescore process was conducted correctly by Pearson
- Does NOT provide question-level feedback
- Does NOT involve examining your actual responses again
- Only available after a Human Rescore has been completed
"The appeal process does not involve a re-assessment of test responses or provide detailed feedback on why individual scores changed." – Pearson PTE (official)
The Most Important Thing to Know: Your Score Can Drop
This is what most students don't realise until it's too late.
When you request a Human Rescore:
- Your score can INCREASE (this is what you're hoping for)
- Your score can STAY THE SAME (wasted money and time)
- Your score can DECREASE (and this new lower score becomes your official result, permanently)
And there is no appeal process that gets you back to your original score. The rescore result is final.
This is not theoretical. I have seen students request rescores and receive lower scores – scores that then caused problems with their visa applications.
When Should You Request a PTE Rescore in 2026?
A Human Rescore is worth considering ONLY when:
- There was a verifiable technical issue – your audio didn't record correctly, the microphone had interference, you experienced software problems
- Your score is significantly below your consistent practice test performance – if you consistently scored 70+ in practice and received 50 in the real test, something may have gone wrong
- One specific section is dramatically different from the others in an unexplained way – e.g., you scored 85 in Reading, 80 in Listening, 78 in Writing, but only 45 in Speaking (with no Speaking-specific issue to explain it)
When NOT to request a rescore:
- Because you "felt" you did well
- Because you're 1-2 points below your visa target
- As a first response to any disappointing result
- Without first checking whether better preparation wouldn't be more reliable than a rescore
The Cost of a PTE Rescore
PTE rescore fees vary. Check the current pricing at pearsonpte.com at the time of your application. In Australia, rescore fees are typically in the AUD $100-$200 range per rescore request.
Note: if the rescore results in a score change (up OR down), you typically do not receive a refund. Only if a Technical Review finds a genuine Pearson-side error are fees typically refunded.
Compare this to the cost of a fresh PTE attempt (~AUD $400-$450). If you're on the fence about whether to rescore or retake, the retake gives you a fresh start with full preparation rather than gambling on an unknown outcome.
What to Do Instead of Rescoring (In Most Cases)
If your score is below your target and there's no obvious technical issue, the most reliable path is:
- Analyse your score report. Which of the four skill scores is lowest? Where is the gap?
- Take a full practice test to confirm whether your current level genuinely matches the result or if you've improved.
- Target your weak points systematically. If Speaking is holding you back, focus on Describe Image, Summarize Group Discussion, and Repeat Sentence.
- Book a retake with adequate preparation time. Booking too quickly (less than 2-3 weeks out) without targeted preparation usually produces the same result.

The Rescore Timeline
If you decide to proceed:
- Log in to your myPTE account at pearsonpte.com
- Navigate to your score report and select the rescore option
- Complete the application and payment within the allowed window (typically 30 days after your result)
- Wait for the outcome – typically 2-4 weeks
- Receive your new score report – which permanently replaces the original
During the rescore period, you can still take a new PTE test. If your retake result is what you need before the rescore comes back, you don't need to wait for the rescore outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions: PTE Rescore
Can a PTE rescore lower my score?
Yes. A PTE Human Rescore can result in your score going up, staying the same, or going down. The rescore result permanently replaces your original score with no option to revert. This is one of the most important facts to understand before requesting a rescore.
How long does a PTE rescore take?
A PTE Human Rescore typically takes 2-4 weeks. During this time, you can still sit a new PTE test. If your retake result meets your requirements before the rescore is complete, you can proceed with your application using the new result.
How much does a PTE rescore cost?
PTE rescore fees vary by region and test date. Check the current pricing at pearsonpte.com when you receive your result. In Australia, fees are typically in the AUD $100-$200 range. The fee is not refunded if the score changes (up or down) – only if Pearson identifies a technical error.
Can I rescore just one section of my PTE?
No. A PTE Human Rescore reviews all open-ended responses across your entire test. You cannot request a rescore of only Speaking or only Writing. This is also why a score can go down – a section you thought was fine might be reviewed and score differently.
When is a PTE rescore worth requesting?
A rescore is worth considering when there was a verifiable technical issue, when your result is dramatically lower than consistent practice test performance, or when one section is inexplicably far below all others. For minor gaps (1-3 points below target) or disappointment without a specific reason, a fresh attempt with better preparation is typically more reliable and less risky.
