PTE Answer Short Question Tips & Tricks 2026: Simple Task, Hidden Traps

PTE Answer Short Question Tips & Tricks 2026: Simple Task, Hidden Traps

Quick Answer: Answer in 1-3 words only – say exactly what is asked and stop. A confident, precise one-word answer scores better than a long vague response. Answer Short Question contributes to your Speaking score and is answered by 79% of students correctly or near-correctly.

Answer Short Question sounds deceptively easy.

You hear a question. You say one or two words. Done, right?

Not quite.

I've seen students score zero in this section because they didn't understand a few simple things about how it works – and in PTE, even a "simple" question can make or break your Speaking score. My name is Alex from Dream English Education, and in this guide I'm going to give you everything you need to maximise your marks in Answer Short Question in 2026.

What Is PTE Answer Short Question?

Answer Short Question is a Speaking section task that appears near the end of the Speaking section in the PTE exam.

Format in 2026:

  • You hear a short question (typically 10–15 seconds of audio)
  • A progress bar begins counting down – you have about 10 seconds to respond
  • Your answer should be one word or a short phrase – never a full sentence
  • There are typically 5–6 questions per exam

What is it testing?
Answer Short Question primarily assesses vocabulary knowledge – do you know the correct word for this concept? It also contributes to your Speaking (Oral Fluency and Pronunciation) scores.

Important 2026 update: Following the August 2025 human assessment changes, Answer Short Question responses may now be reviewed by a human grader as part of the overall speaking assessment. This doesn't change the basic strategy much, but it does mean your response needs to be a genuine, clear word or phrase – not a murmur or an approximation.

How Does Answer Short Question Affect Your Score?

This is where a lot of students get confused. Answer Short Question is a Speaking task – meaning it contributes to your Speaking section score only, NOT to your Listening score.

However – and this is important – the oral fluency and pronunciation points from every speaking task add up. If you consistently respond to Answer Short Question with a clear, confident, correctly pronounced word, you're stacking points in your Speaking score that can push you from 75 to 79, or from 79 to 82.

Don't dismiss this task because it seems simple. Treat every answer as a chance to rack up clean speaking points.

The Types of Questions You'll See

Answer Short Question draws from general knowledge and everyday vocabulary. The questions typically fall into these categories:

Science & Nature:
"What do you call the process by which plants use sunlight to produce food?"photosynthesis
"What is the name of the force that pulls objects toward the Earth?"gravity

Everyday Life & Objects:
"What do you call the person who delivers letters and parcels to your home?"postman or mail carrier
"What do you call the piece of furniture you sleep on?"bed

Medicine & Health:
"What do you call the medical professional who performs surgery?"surgeon
"What is the name of the organ that pumps blood around the body?"heart

Academic & General Knowledge:
"Who wrote 'Romeo and Juliet'?"Shakespeare
"What is the capital of Australia?"Canberra
"What do you call a map that shows elevation and terrain?"topographic map

Economics & Business:
"What do you call money paid to employees for their work?"salary or wages
"What is the term for buying goods and selling them at a higher price?"trading or retail

The questions aren't trick questions. They test whether you know common English vocabulary across general subject areas.

PTE Answer Short Question Tips 2026: The Dream English Strategy

1. Answer immediately and confidently

The moment the question ends and the microphone opens – speak. Don't pause. Don't say "umm" or "err." The AI scores your fluency, and long pauses at the start of your response hurt your oral fluency score.

Even if you're not 100% sure of the answer – say something clearly and move on.

2. One or two words only

This is not an essay. Do not say: "I think the answer to this question might be photosynthesis."

Just say: "Photosynthesis."

Clear. Confident. Correct. Done.

Saying more than you need to doesn't earn extra points. It eats into your response time and can confuse the AI scorer.

3. What to do when you don't know the answer

This happens. Even native speakers don't know every vocabulary word tested in PTE.

Here's what to do:

  1. Make your best guess – say the closest word you know confidently. The AI scores on partial credit too.
  2. Do not stay silent – silence is always worse than an incorrect word. An attempt is better than nothing.
  3. Do not try to describe the word – don't say "I don't know but it's like a thing that…" This will confuse the scorer.
  4. Move on immediately – don't waste your 10 seconds overthinking. Give your best answer and click Next.

"In Answer Short Question, a confident wrong answer often scores better than a hesitant right one. Why? Because oral fluency is part of your score. Speak clearly and move on." – Alex, Dream English Education

4. Practice the vocabulary, not just the format

Unlike most PTE tasks, Answer Short Question has a consistent pool of vocabulary topics that come up again and again. The best preparation is targeted vocabulary practice across the categories above: science, health, everyday objects, geography, economics, and general knowledge.

Spend 10–15 minutes per day for two weeks doing answer short question vocabulary drills. This is low-effort, high-reward preparation.

5. Pronunciation matters more than most students think

Because Answer Short Question is a single-word or short-phrase response, your pronunciation of that one word is very visible to the scorer. If you say "fo-to-synthesis" instead of "pho-to-SYN-thesis" – that affects your score.

Practice the pronunciation of words you're not sure about before your exam. Dictionary apps that include audio pronunciation (like the Oxford Learner's Dictionary app) are perfect for this.

What the 2026 Format Looks Like (Step by Step)

  1. Audio plays – You hear a question spoken by a male or female voice
  2. Progress bar begins – A short recording timer appears
  3. Speak your answer – Say your one or two words clearly into the microphone
  4. Click "Next" – Move to the next question immediately after responding
  5. Repeat for each of the 5–6 questions in the set

Do not wait for the progress bar to expire before clicking Next. Once you've said your answer, click Next immediately and keep your momentum going through the exam.

Frequently Asked Questions: PTE Answer Short Question

How many Answer Short Question questions are there in PTE?

Typically 5-6 Answer Short Question questions appear in each PTE exam, near the end of the Speaking & Writing section. Because they're fast (the whole sequence takes only a few minutes), many students underestimate how much consistent accuracy matters.

What does Answer Short Question contribute to in PTE?

Answer Short Question primarily assesses vocabulary knowledge and contributes to your Speaking score. A strong run across all 5-6 questions adds up meaningfully – and because the questions are short, a well-prepared student can consistently score full marks here with the right vocabulary practice.

What happens if I don't know the answer?

Always attempt a response – silence is worse than a wrong answer. Make your best guess confidently in one or two words, then click Next immediately. The fluency component of your score benefits from a confident, immediate response even if the vocabulary word itself is incorrect.

Are PTE Answer Short Questions always the same questions?

PTE draws from a repeating question bank with consistent vocabulary themes. While you won't see the exact same question every time, the same topic areas – science, health, everyday objects, geography, economics, measurements – appear repeatedly. Regular practice across these categories is the most efficient preparation strategy.

Can I give a two-word answer in PTE Answer Short Question?

Yes – one or two words is the ideal response. A single correct word is perfect. A two-word phrase (for example "blood pressure" or "solar panel") is also fully acceptable. What you should avoid is a full sentence, a description, or filler phrases like "I think the answer is…" – these waste your limited response time and don't add points.
