As Australia is the primary destination for PTE test-takers, the demand for high scores (79+) is huge. This has created a massive coaching industry, but frankly, not all of it is designed with your best interests at heart. As often the PTE classes fees are ridiculously high – and unknowing students are sold on big words like GUARANTEED & UNLIMITED coaching.

With over 10 years of experience in the PTE space in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, we’ve seen everything. Here’s an honest breakdown of the coaching options, the real costs, and the common traps you need to avoid.

Type 1: In-person PTE Coaching Cost

This is the traditional classroom model. But the structure they sell is often very different from the reality.

The Common PTE Coaching Structure:

Institutes typically offer large group classes of 15-30 people. The biggest issue is that they often try to teach the entire PTE course in just one week, dedicating only a single day or sometimes just 2 hours per section. After that, it’s just mock tests.

The Price: For this rushed experience, you can expect to pay $600 – $800 AUD.

The Reality: How much can you truly learn about the complexities of PTE Speaking in 2 hours, surrounded by 20 other people? In our experience, only the most intelligent students or those with an already high level of English can pass this way. The rest often fail.

Watch Out for These Traps

Private 1-to-1 Classes: The same institutes will offer private sessions, but at a steep cost, usually charging $900 – $1200+ AUD.

Having to take FULL PTE Coaching: often you will be forced to take the full coaching package, even if you already got 90 in one section on your own.

The “Unlimited” Course Scam: This is one of the biggest scams we’ve seen. You’ll be charged $1200 – $1500 AUD for the promise of “unlimited classes.” What does this really mean? You can attend the same 4 introductory classes again and again for a year. The content never changes. They just don’t kick you out of the coaching center.

Inexperienced Tutors: To handle the high number of students, these centers often hire their own former students who scored 90. They may have a high score, but they have no teaching certifications or real expertise in diagnosing and fixing problems for students from different backgrounds. You’ll often see their staff change frequently.

Type 2: PTE Coaching Online

Many institutes have started offering PTE coaching online (as do we at Dream English) – but often it’s just a low-effort add-on.

The Common Method: What they call “online coaching” is often just a live recording of an in-person group class. You are one of many watching a video feed from the back of a crowded room. You be the judge of how enjoyable and effective that is. They do it because it takes no extra effort to sell the same service to more people.

The Dream English Approach: Online learning should be personal. Our online classes are held via Zoom with a strict maximum of 5-7 people. This ensures it’s an interactive workshop where every single student gets personalized feedback and attention from the trainer.

Type 3: Private PTE Tutor / PTE Classes Cost

This can seem like a good option, but it comes with its own set of risks.

The Common Scenario: Often, a “private tutor” is just someone who got a good score in PTE and is now teaching their friends. They may be well-intentioned, but they lack the expertise to handle students with different language backgrounds, specific speaking problems, or unique learning needs. Crucially, they don’t have access to up-to-date question banks or professional practice platforms with scored mock tests.
