PTE vs IELTS Score Conversion Table 2026: The Official Chart

Quick Answer: For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Home Affairs sets a minimum in each PTE component instead of one flat score. Superior English (IELTS 8 in each band) needs PTE Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85 and Speaking 88. Proficient (IELTS 7) needs 58, 59, 69 and 76. Competent (IELTS 6) needs 47, 48, 51 and 54. The old flat 50, 65 and 79 scores apply only to tests sat on or before 6 August 2025.

One of the most common questions I get is: "Alex, I have IELTS 7 – what does that mean in PTE?"

Or the reverse: "I need IELTS 8 for my visa – what PTE score is that equivalent to?"

Today I'm going to answer both questions definitively. The conversion table I'm sharing comes directly from Pearson's official PTE Academic Score Guide – updated with the most recent alignment research. This isn't a third-party estimate. This is as official as it gets.

Australian Visa Benchmarks: What You Actually Need

Visa English levels are set by the Department of Home Affairs, not by Pearson or IELTS. Since 7 August 2025, each level has a minimum for every PTE component. Overall score alone does not count.

Tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 can still be used as evidence until 6 August 2028, depending on the visa. Always check the current requirement on the Home Affairs website, and note that the visa levels are not a straight PTE to IELTS conversion.

Why PTE and IELTS Scores Don't Convert Perfectly

Something important to understand: this conversion table shows approximate equivalency – the range of PTE scores where test takers with a given IELTS band typically fall. It's not a mathematically exact formula.

Here's why:

  • PTE and IELTS measure English proficiency through different task types and formats
  • Individual test takers can have different relative strengths (e.g., someone is a strong writer but weaker in Speaking)
  • The scoring scales are not designed to be identical – they use different psychometric models

What this means practically: you cannot assume that if you score IELTS 7, you will automatically score PTE 65-70 without preparation. PTE requires specific test-taking strategies. The format is completely different.

This is one of the reasons students who switch from IELTS to PTE without proper PTE preparation often underperform initially – and then dramatically improve once they learn the system.

Why Many IELTS Students Score Higher in PTE

I shared this in our PTE vs IELTS guide, but it's worth repeating here: the reason students often score a higher PTE equivalent than their IELTS band is not because PTE is "easier English." It's because:

  1. AI scoring is consistent. Unlike IELTS human examiners, the PTE algorithm scores identically across every test. Once you know what it rewards, you can train specifically for it.

  2. Strategy matters more. In PTE, knowing which questions carry the most weight – and practising them most – translates directly to a higher score. This is the core of what we teach at Dream English.

  3. No face-to-face speaking test. Students who get nervous in front of IELTS human examiners often perform significantly better in PTE's computer-based speaking tasks.

The CEFR Framework: Another Way to Compare

Both PTE and IELTS map onto the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages:

For Australian immigration purposes, Proficient English (IELTS 7.0 in each band, PTE 58/59/69/76 in Listening/Reading/Writing/Speaking) roughly corresponds to C1, and Superior English (IELTS 8.0, PTE 69/70/85/88) sits at the upper C1/C2 boundary.

How to Use This Table for Your Visa Preparation

Step 1: Identify your target English level for your visa (Competent / Proficient / Superior)
Step 2: Find the corresponding PTE score requirement (50 / 65 / 79)
Step 3: Take a full PTE scored practice test to establish your baseline
Step 4: Use the gap between your baseline and target to structure your study

If you have an IELTS result already, use this table to estimate where your PTE baseline might start. But take a PTE-specific practice test to get an accurate picture – prior IELTS experience doesn't automatically transfer.
