PTE vs IELTS Score Conversion Table 2026: The Official Chart
Quick Answer: PTE 50 = IELTS 6.0, PTE 65 = IELTS 7.0, and PTE 79 = IELTS 8.0 – these are the three visa-critical benchmarks for Australian immigration. Always check both Overall and component score equivalencies, not just the Overall.
Hey guys, Alex here.
One of the most common questions I get is: "Alex, I have IELTS 7 – what does that mean in PTE?"
Or the reverse: "I need IELTS 8 for my visa – what PTE score is that equivalent to?"
Today I'm going to answer both questions definitively. The conversion table I'm sharing comes directly from Pearson's official PTE Academic Score Guide – updated with the most recent alignment research. This isn't a third-party estimate. This is as official as it gets.

Australian Visa Benchmarks: What You Actually Need
For most Australian visa applicants, these are the key conversion points:
| Immigration English Level | IELTS Equivalent | PTE Score Required |
|---|---|---|
| Competent English | IELTS 6.0 (each band) | PTE 50 (Overall + each component) |
| Proficient English | IELTS 7.0 (each band) | PTE 65 (Overall + each component) |
| Superior English | IELTS 8.0 (overall) / 7.0 (each band) | PTE 79 (Overall + each component) |
These benchmarks are set by the Department of Home Affairs – not by Pearson or IELTS. They determine your eligibility and points tally for skilled migration visas.

Why PTE and IELTS Scores Don't Convert Perfectly
Something important to understand: this conversion table shows approximate equivalency – the range of PTE scores where test takers with a given IELTS band typically fall. It's not a mathematically exact formula.
Here's why:
- PTE and IELTS measure English proficiency through different task types and formats
- Individual test takers can have different relative strengths (e.g., someone is a strong writer but weaker in Speaking)
- The scoring scales are not designed to be identical – they use different psychometric models
What this means practically: you cannot assume that if you score IELTS 7, you will automatically score PTE 65-70 without preparation. PTE requires specific test-taking strategies. The format is completely different.
This is one of the reasons students who switch from IELTS to PTE without proper PTE preparation often underperform initially – and then dramatically improve once they learn the system.
Why Many IELTS Students Score Higher in PTE
I shared this in our PTE vs IELTS guide, but it's worth repeating here: the reason students often score a higher PTE equivalent than their IELTS band is not because PTE is "easier English." It's because:
-
AI scoring is consistent. Unlike IELTS human examiners, the PTE algorithm scores identically across every test. Once you know what it rewards, you can train specifically for it.
-
Strategy matters more. In PTE, knowing which questions carry the most weight – and practising them most – translates directly to a higher score. This is the core of what we teach at Dream English.
-
No face-to-face speaking test. Students who get nervous in front of IELTS human examiners often perform significantly better in PTE's computer-based speaking tasks.
The CEFR Framework: Another Way to Compare
Both PTE and IELTS map onto the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages:
| CEFR Level | Approximate PTE | Approximate IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| B1 | 30-42 | 4.0-5.0 |
| B2 | 43-58 | 5.5-6.5 |
| C1 | 59-75 | 7.0-8.0 |
| C2 | 76-90 | 8.0-9.0 |
For Australian immigration purposes, Proficient English (PTE 65 / IELTS 7.0) roughly corresponds to C1, and Superior English (PTE 79 / IELTS 8.0) sits at the upper C1/C2 boundary.
How to Use This Table for Your Visa Preparation
Step 1: Identify your target English level for your visa (Competent / Proficient / Superior)
Step 2: Find the corresponding PTE score requirement (50 / 65 / 79)
Step 3: Take a full PTE scored practice test to establish your baseline
Step 4: Use the gap between your baseline and target to structure your study
If you have an IELTS result already, use this table to estimate where your PTE baseline might start. But take a PTE-specific practice test to get an accurate picture – prior IELTS experience doesn't automatically transfer.
Our PTE 30-Day Study Plan gives you a structured pathway from your baseline to your target. And our PTE Score Breakdown guide shows you exactly where to invest your practice time.

Frequently Asked Questions: PTE vs IELTS Score Conversion
What is IELTS 7 equivalent to in PTE?
According to Pearson's official conversion data, IELTS 7.0 corresponds approximately to a PTE Overall score of 63-70. For Australian immigration purposes, IELTS 7.0 (each band) is equivalent to PTE 65 (each component) – both count as Proficient English.
What PTE score equals IELTS 8?
IELTS 8.0 corresponds approximately to a PTE Overall of 79-85. For Australian immigration, PTE 79 (all components) is the equivalent of IELTS 8.0 – both are Superior English, earning 20 points on the 189 visa EOI.
Is this conversion table official?
Yes. The conversion data in this article comes directly from Pearson's official PTE Academic Score Guide (pearsonpte.com), based on research aligning PTE and IELTS scores. The Australian Department of Home Affairs sets the immigration equivalency benchmarks separately.
If I have IELTS 7, will I automatically score PTE 65?
Not necessarily. The conversion table shows where test takers tend to score across both tests, but PTE requires specific preparation and strategies that differ from IELTS. Many students initially score below their expected PTE equivalent and then exceed it after proper PTE-specific preparation.
Which is easier to get 79 in – PTE or IELTS 8.0?
Many students find PTE 79 more achievable than IELTS 8.0 because PTE's AI scoring is consistent and trainable through strategy. IELTS 8.0 requires performance to be assessed at a very high level by human examiners, which introduces variability. That said, the right answer depends on your individual strengths – we recommend trying a free mock test for both before committing.
