PTE vs TOEFL 2026: Which Is Better for Australia?

PTE vs TOEFL 2026: Which Is Better for Australia?

Quick Answer: PTE is the better choice for Australian visa, immigration, and university applications in 2026 – it is accepted everywhere TOEFL is, results come in 48-72 hours vs up to 10 days for TOEFL, and the AI scoring is more consistent and strategy-responsive.

Hey guys, Alex here.

I get asked about PTE vs TOEFL fairly regularly. In Australia, PTE dominates – it's by far the most popular English test for immigration applicants. But TOEFL has its place too, particularly for university admissions.

So which is actually better for you? Let me compare them directly – format, cost, acceptance, scoring, and who should choose which.

Is TOEFL Accepted for Australian Visas?

This is the crucial question for most of my students.

PTE: Accepted for the vast majority of Australian Department of Home Affairs visa categories – skilled migration, temporary work, student visas, family visas.

TOEFL: Accepted for some Australian visa categories, but NOT for the Skilled Migration Program (subclass 189, 190, 482, 485, etc.) via the standard immigration points system.

For skilled migration visas specifically, the Department of Home Affairs recognises IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT (for certain visa types), OET, and Cambridge English. However, TOEFL's acceptance is more limited in Australian skilled migration compared to PTE and IELTS. Always verify with the Department of Home Affairs or your migration agent for your specific visa subclass.

Bottom line: If you're applying for a skilled migration visa in Australia, PTE is the safer and more universally accepted choice. TOEFL is more relevant for university and some student visa purposes.

PTE vs TOEFL: Test Format Comparison

PTE Academic Format

PTE integrates tasks across sections. For example, Repeat Sentence scores toward BOTH Listening and Speaking. This means:

  • Fewer total questions needed to assess multiple skills
  • 2-hour exam duration
  • Tasks often overlap in what they assess
  • Strong performance on a few key tasks (Describe Image, Write from Dictation) has outsized impact

TOEFL iBT Format

TOEFL is structured in four sequential sections:

  • Reading: 2 passages, ~36 questions, 35 minutes
  • Listening: 3-5 lectures + 2-3 conversations, 36-51 minutes
  • Speaking: 4 tasks, 16 minutes
  • Writing: 2 tasks (Integrated + Academic Discussion), 29 minutes

Total: approximately 3 hours.

The TOEFL is longer. Many students find the additional hour tiring. PTE's 2-hour format is more concentrated but also less fatiguing.

PTE vs TOEFL: Scoring

PTE Scoring

  • AI-scored throughout, with human expert review added in the latest PTE update for extended speaking and writing tasks
  • Score range: 10-90
  • Component scores: Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing (each 10-90)
  • Results in 48-72 hours
  • Strategy-based: high-leverage tasks (Describe Image = 15% Overall) reward targeted preparation

TOEFL Scoring

  • Human + AI hybrid scoring for speaking and writing
  • Score range: 0-120 (30 per section)
  • Human raters score speaking responses – more variability between test sittings
  • Results in 6-10 days
  • Less "gameable" through task-specific strategies; broader preparation required

For whom is PTE scoring better?
Students who learn strategy well, can prepare specifically for PTE task types, and want consistent AI-evaluated results.

For whom is TOEFL scoring better?
Students who genuinely communicate well in English but find PTE task types (especially Describe Image or Repeat Sentence) uncomfortable. The TOEFL's broader reading and listening sections may suit more naturally strong readers.

PTE vs TOEFL: Cost

Both tests cost roughly AUD $330-$450 in Australia. PTE tends to be slightly more expensive, but the faster results (48-72 hours vs 6-10 days) is often worth it for visa applicants on tight timelines.

Neither test is cheap. Making the right choice first (and passing on the first attempt) is always the most cost-effective strategy.

PTE vs TOEFL: Score Validity

Test Validity
PTE Academic 3 years
TOEFL iBT 2 years

PTE's 3-year validity is an advantage for immigration applicants with longer timelines. See our PTE Score Validity guide for details on how validity affects visa applications.

PTE vs TOEFL: Which Is Easier?

Honestly? Neither is "easier" in an absolute sense. They assess the same English proficiency – they just do it differently.

PTE might be better for you if:

  • You're applying for Australian skilled migration (189, 482, etc.)
  • You want faster results (visa timelines are often tight)
  • You learn well from strategy and targeted practice
  • You find face-to-face testing more stressful (PTE is entirely computer-based, no human examiner interaction)
  • You want to use a study approach with predictable outcomes

TOEFL might be better for you if:

  • Your primary goal is university admission (not immigration)
  • You're a natural reader and writer who does well in longer test formats
  • Your target institution specifically requires TOEFL

My Recommendation for Most Australian Immigration Applicants

For the vast majority of students coming to Dream English – skilled migrants targeting the 189, 190, 482, or 485 visa – I recommend PTE Academic over TOEFL.

The reasons:

  1. Broader immigration acceptance in Australia's skilled migration system
  2. Faster results – critical for visa timelines
  3. Longer validity – 3 years gives you more buffer in lengthy applications
  4. Strategy-based preparation – with the right approach, PTE is highly teachable

For universities that accept both (most Australian universities do), PTE is equally valid.

Frequently Asked Questions: PTE vs TOEFL

Is PTE or TOEFL better for Australian skilled migration?

PTE is generally better for Australian skilled migration. PTE Academic is more widely accepted across Australian Department of Home Affairs visa categories (189, 190, 482, 485) compared to TOEFL. If your goal is a skilled migration visa, PTE is the safer and more universally recognised choice.

Is PTE easier than TOEFL?

Neither test is inherently easier. They assess the same English skills through different formats. PTE tends to reward specific strategic preparation – students who learn the task types and practice with strategy often score higher than their natural English level might suggest. TOEFL favours broader, natural English communicators, especially strong readers.

How do PTE and TOEFL scores compare?

PTE uses a 10-90 scale; TOEFL uses a 0-120 scale. For Australian immigration purposes, PTE 65 (Proficient English) is the standard for skilled migration, while TOEFL iBT equivalents for the same immigration levels are tested separately. Check with the Department of Home Affairs for specific TOEFL score equivalencies for your visa type.

Which test has faster results – PTE or TOEFL?

PTE provides results within 48-72 hours of your test. TOEFL takes 6-10 days. For visa applicants on tight timelines, PTE's turnaround time is a significant practical advantage.

Can I use TOEFL for the 189 or 482 visa in Australia?

TOEFL iBT is accepted for some Australian visa categories, but its acceptance for skilled migration visas (189, 482, etc.) through the standard points system is more limited than PTE. Verify with the Department of Home Affairs or a registered migration agent for your specific visa subclass before choosing TOEFL for immigration purposes.
